# LinuxServer.io Containers

The most popular container images for homelab, maintained by LinuxServer.io.

## When to Use

- Deploying media servers (Plex, Jellyfin, Sonarr, Radarr)
- Self-hosted apps (Nextcloud, Gitea, Bookstack)
- Need consistent, well-maintained container images

## Core Concepts

### PUID and PGID

All LinuxServer containers use PUID/PGID to run as your user:

```bash
# Find your user/group IDs
id $USER
# uid=1000(fred) gid=1000(fred) groups=...
```

```yaml
environment:
  - PUID=1000
  - PGID=1000
  - TZ=America/Los_Angeles
```

**Why?** Files created inside the container will be owned by your user, not root.

### Standard Paths

All LinuxServer images use consistent paths:

|------|---------|
| `/config` | Application config and data |
| `/data` | General data (varies by app) |
| `/downloads` | Download location |
| `/media` | Media files |

## Troubleshooting

### Permission Denied Errors

```bash
# Check ownership
ls -la /path/to/config

# Fix ownership (match PUID/PGID)
sudo chown -R 1000:1000 /path/to/config
```

### Finding Container Logs

```bash
# Docker logs
docker logs -f jellyfin

# Application logs inside container
docker exec -it jellyfin cat /config/logs/log.txt
```

### Container Won't Start

```bash
# Check events
docker events --filter container=jellyfin

# Inspect container
docker inspect jellyfin | grep -A 10 State
```

## Best Practices

1. **Always set PUID/PGID** to your actual user IDs
2. **Use bind mounts for media** - easier to manage large libraries
3. **Use named volumes for config** - cleaner backups
4. **Set timezone (TZ)** - prevents log timestamp confusion
5. **Pin versions in production** - `jellyfin:10.8.13` not `:latest`
6. **Check image docs** - each app has specific environment variables
